The tribe Attini (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) comprises 14 genera with approximately 230 described ant species, which are engaged in an obligate mutualism with fungi. The fungus is cultivated inside their colonies, using a variety of organic material as substrate. The fungus is used as food by the ants, and in return, the ants nourish, protect, and disperse their fungal cultivars. Although all species of this tribe cultivate fungi, attine ants are quite heterogeneous in relation to agricultural system, colony size and social structure, substrate preparation behavior, foraging behavior, etc. Agriculture, symbiosis and natural history traits of fungus-farming ants are discussed in this review, as well as future research directions. |

A traça-da-castanha (Anacampsis phytomiella) é a praga mais importante do período de frutificação do cajueiro porque ataca o fruto (castanha), causando elevados prejuízos por destruir completamente a amêndoa da castanha de caju. O principal sintoma de ataque é a presença de um furo localizado na parte distal da castanha e é conhecido pelo produtor como castanha furada. O adulto é uma pequena mariposa de hábito noturno, com cerca de 1,5 cm de envergadura, coloração escura, com pequenas manchas claras nas asas. Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) is a polifagous insect of major economic impact in the western hemisphere and exhibits two strains (i.e., corn and rice) that are morphologically identical but differ in ecology, genetics and physiology. In this work we identified these strains and their respective hybrids by using a PCR-RFLP of the COI gene and PCR of the tandem region FR. Moreover, we performed a population structure analysis by using 253 larvae from Tolima, a region where S. frugiperda is a pest on corn, rice, sorghum and cotton.
